Marco Alejandro Cruz is the Conducting Fellow of the Symphony Orchestra of Northern Virginia. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he earned a bachelor's degree in Piano Performance from the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and later a master's in Collaborative Piano from the University of Music and Performing Arts Mannheim (Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim) in Germany. He began his professional career with the U.S. Army Europe Band & Chorus, performing widely across Europe and the Middle East.

In Germany, he served for several years as a vocal coach and assistant conductor at the Landestheater Coburg (State Opera House), deepening his knowledge of opera and the broader vocal repertoire. He also served as chorus master and assistant conductor at the Wilhelma Theater in Stuttgart, including for productions of Verdi's Rigoletto.

Marco draws on a broad repertoire spanning the classical canon and contemporary Latin music, with a particular interest in classical-inspired piano improvisation. He values the collaborative nature of conducting and strives to connect with musicians and audiences through performances of depth and emotional resonance. His conducting studies and masterclasses include work with Jeffery Meyer, Gary Lewis, and David Itkin. He will begin an Artist Diploma in Orchestral Conducting under Maestro Simeone Tartaglione at The Catholic University of America in the fall of 2026.

He also holds a Master of International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, where his capstone examined music education and social cohesion in Colombia.
